Our first stop outside of Paris took us to Bayeux in Normandy. We had savoury buckwheat galettes for lunch before checking out the famous tapestry. I really liked this picturesque city and would have loved to have spent a bit more time wandering through its streets. I'm not sure if it's always as quiet as it was when we visited, but I think as much as we all loved busy and bustling Paris, Bayeux was a much-needed antidote to the hectic pace of the capital.
Still in Normandy, we were lucky enough to visit Mont St Michel, which was incredible. For some reason, parts of it reminded me of the Cliffs of Insanity from The Princess Bride. I'm sure that's probably very odd, but there you go. It was low tide when we visited, making for an interesting landscape. I'd love to visit again at high tide. There's a great video here, showing what it's like at different times of day and from different perspectives. It's well worth a look.
Moving on to Brittany, we then had the opportunity to spend some time in St Malo. I can see why this place has become popular with British holidaymakers in the summer. It is stunning, with a beautiful beach. At low tide you can walk out to the fortress and then look back on the town. When you walk around the walled part of the city, you are treated to some amazing views as well. While wandering through the old town, we stumbled across a bride and groom having their photos taken. We lost them for a bit and then lo and behold when we decided to have a look at the church, there they were! I'm told that couples often may not be able to have their ceremony at the church itself and so will choose to visit it later to get their photos. I loved that they took the chance to take a selfie while waiting for their photographer to organise his gear!
Our next move was to the Loire Valley, where we visited the chateaux Chambord and Chenonceau - they were particular highlights of the trip for me and I'm really excited to share some shots from that part of the trip later.
If you missed them, you can see my Paris posts here and here.
