It's probably only fair to warn you that this is going to be a picture-heavy post.
Last weekend I took some photos at the first working bee for Produce to the People. This is what it looked like.
I'm not really sure why, but sometimes alpacas remind me of Owen Wilson. I mean that in the nicest way possible.
So here's the deal with Produce to the People. It was founded by the very lovely Penelope and it's all about getting local, fresh produce to those in the community who need it most. Food that would otherwise be wasted and thrown away is re-distributed to families and locals who are struggling to make ends meet. At the moment, people can head on out to the food hub at the back of Burnie High School (Fidler St, Cooee) three times a week to collect food. There is a small amount of state funding (very small) and some support from the Work for the Dole scheme as well. Penelope's hoping to get some workshops up and running, and get school groups along to learn a plethora of skills relating to growing food. The space they have is fabulous - in need of a little TLC (can you help them with that?) but it has the potential to be something amazing in the community - a place where people grow, gather and give. What's not to love about that?
While you're there (helping out, picking up some fruit and veg - whatever the case may be), make sure you check in with the alpacas and the chooks - they like a bit of a chat. And! What's more, there is a new baby alpaca! Her name is Florence. She's a bit cute.
The working bee on the 31st of January saw the farm space in a hive of activity. There were plenty of extra helping hands and volunteers were fed very generously by New York Down Under on the day.
If you'd like to keep up with what's happening with the PTTP peeps, you might like to peruse their blog and very definitely 'Like' their FB page - lots of updates there to keep you in the loop, including what produce is available at the food hub. If you can support these guys in any way, get in contact with them, I know they'd love to hear from you.
