I have to tell you, I have had a very interesting week. It started last Sunday with the discovery of a leaking water pipe. That's always fun, isn't it? So my working week was punctuated with visits from plumbers and builders, which the cat enjoyed thoroughly. She's seen more people this week than in the rest of her whole life I'm guessing.
Also, my awesome sister flew down from Brisbane for the week. It was really lovely to have some quality time with her and my parents lately. We were ladies who lunched, mum hosted a Tupperware party (my cousin has just started working for them and she's doing a brilliant job) and we celebrated my birthday last night with a yummy dinner.
A couple of days ago, I started getting a bucketload of notifications from Instagram. I thought my account had been hacked or just hugely spammed or something else icky like that. I even sent them a message trying to figure out what had gone wrong. It wasn't until after I'd sent it that I saw a message from them telling me that they'd chosen me to appear on the suggested users list. So, when people first sign up to IG, I'm one of the accounts they see to follow. I had mixed feelings about this - you can ask them to take you off the list but I was curious about the experience, so I'm sticking it out.
I have to tell you, if this ever happens to you here are my tips to get through it.
At the moment I'm just watching, waiting and seeing what happens. My followers before this all went down were around 1,700. Right this second it's at around 9,300. That's after two days of being on that suggested users list. I'm not really bothered about how many people follow me. Instagram for me is about the community and beautiful photos. Lots of those followers will unfollow purely because I'm not necessarily going to follow them back (soooo many of them are twelvsie-selfie accounts.) Lots are ghost accounts, so they'll disappear too. Over the couple of days of this, I have found a small handful of good accounts to follow and I'm hoping that some of those new followers of mine will be genuinely interested in my photography and stick around for a bit. I'm hoping there won't be too much spam - there's already been a little bit of it, but nothing to make me worry a whole lot. Not yet anyway.
Overall it has made me think so much more about what I want to get out of Instagram (e.g. creativity, community, interaction - not necessarily tonnes and tonnes of followers.) Having a larger following does make me also think a lot more about what I post in the first place, too. If you'd like to see how it all goes, hey, you may as well follow me too! My handle is @lookseebynaomifenton - maybe even leave a comment to let me know you're not a ghost account and I'll check out your feed!
