WHAT IS AN ELOPEMENT or intimate wedding?

And what exactly is the difference between the two?

The meaning of the word elopement has changed fairly significantly over the years. Originally it referred to running away in general, with no specific connection to marriage. Then, around the seventeenth century it came to mean running away to get married without parental consent (Lydia Bennet and George Whickam’s escape from Brighton to Gretna Green in Pride and Prejudice is a particularly famous example of this type of elopement!)

However, these days it tends to refer to a wedding ceremony held in private - perhaps with a handful of guests, or none other than the photographer and the celebrant.

Intimate or micro weddings may comprise of a surprise ceremony, the most common version of this being the engagement party that becomes a surprise wedding. Otherwise, they are just the same as a regular wedding, including the usual planning, with the main point of difference being the number of guests. These smaller weddings tend to have a range of between twenty-fifty guests.

As far as photography is concerned, elopements and intimate weddings usually require fewer hours coverage (usually between two-four) but can still incorporate getting-ready, ceremony, couple and family (if applicable) portraits and reception coverage. As these weddings are smaller events with few (if any) guests, your photographer will provide you with a briefer gallery of images.

TO ELOPE OR NOT TO ELOPE?

There are any number of factors people have in mind when considering whether or not to elope or have an intimate wedding. They can include family considerations, financial considerations and the desire to plan a more environmentally sustainable wedding.
